Dawei villager wins rare court case against Thai mining company in Dawei, Myanmar.

A villager in Dawei district took his case against Thai-owned Myanmar Pongpipat Company (MPC) to the Dawei District Court in 2015, demanding compensation after flooding of water pollution from the firm’s mine damaged 882 of his betel nut trees and causing widespread damage to property and environment. MPC, which is a company that has operated the Heinda Mine since 1999, has been embroiled in a number of controversies relating to alleged pollution, property destruction and land confiscations in the area. The court ruled in the villager’s favour on January 7, awarding him US$76,533 (114,800,000 Kyat) in damages.
